RETHINK LEVEL A For decades, traditional Level A suits have been considered the gold standard for maximum protection in hazardous environments. But that protection comes at a cost—encapsulation brings serious drawbacks like heat stress, restricted vision, limited dexterity, heavy load, and long don/doff times. The truth is, less than 5% of HazMat calls require fully encapsulated gear—and in FDNY’s experience, it’s even below 1%. That means responders are often wearing more than they need, sacrificing speed, mobility, and comfort without additional benefit. Therefore, we here at LION accessed the campaign ReThink Level A. to learn what was needed to ensure speed, mobility and comfort. Rethink Level A campaign was launched by the International Personal Protection (IPP), Inc. & Emergency Response TIPS, LLC to bring awareness to the emergency response community on PPE modernization and the utilization of gear designed specifically for the emergency response scenarios. Why Particulate Blocking Hoods Are Now a Fire Service Standard Firefighting has never been safe—but the risks extend far beyond flames and heat. One of the deadliest hazards firefighters face today is invisible: toxic particulates. Studies show that firefighters are significantly more likely to develop cancer than the general population, largely due to repeated exposure to carcinogens found in smoke and soot. To combat this threat, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has taken a critical step. The newly updated NFPA 1970 standard, which consolidates multiple PPE standards, now mandates the use of particulate blocking hoods in structural firefighting ensembles. This isn’t just a guideline—it’s a shift in baseline protection requirements.
