At the base of the Escalating Approach (DIGITAL FIRE ENVIRONMENT) one might find firefighter recruits and seasoned professionals alike who either need to learn the basics of firefighting, or are working to perfect new techniques or enhance teamwork using realistic scenarios in the safest environment possible. Environmental factors are another reason to use Digital Fire Environments, unlike Class A fires which can be restricted and may not be allowed in many locations, digital fires can be used anywhere, and still have the look and feel of an actual fire. LION has a wide range of digital products that can help build confidence and meet stringent environmental policies all the while providing a realistic training environment. . Products like the ATTACK™ digital fire panels are perfect for simulating flames in a realistic way without producing a real flame. As your training needs progress to the stage of a live fire, propane-based Class B training tools can be utilized to provide a clean burning option that allows for more control and repeatability. The technology LION employs in each Class B training tool is specifically developed to give the training officer full control over the evolution, and to allow officers to reset and repeat training evolutions with ease.
When it comes to Class A fires, LION has developed advanced technology and tools that help start and stop the fire quickly and have the capability to control the flow of air and smoke to help trainers replicate multiple different real-world scenarios. One customers example of the “Escalating Approach”: Training Officer Tom believed in training everyone in a Class A environment. Tom had a recruit who was struggling in this environment. During a training simulation, the recruit pulled off his mask in a panic, causing his lungs to fill with smoke. Luckily, the recruit survived the incident, but it was a wake-up call for Tom. He realized that starting new recruits in a Class A environment was not the safest or most effective approach. He decided to begin training new recruits in a digital environment with nontoxic simulated smoke, using LION ATTACK™ digital panels combined with LION SG4000™ smoke generators.
The ATTACK panels provided a safe and controlled environment for new recruits to build their skills and confidence without exposing them to live fire too early in their training. They could practice a wide range of firefighting scenarios, including search and rescue, ventilation, and hose management, all while experiencing the realistic sights and sounds of a fire.
As the recruits gained experience and confidence, Tom progressively introduced more realistic training scenarios, including propane-based Class B environments. Using the “Evolution of Training” approach fosters the development of muscle memory for routine tasks but also teaches situation awareness, which helps firefighters adapt to changing situations. By building the recruits’ knowledge, skills, and confidence gradually, Tom was able to ensure that they were fully prepared to face the challenges of the job.
